Chapter Thirteen
With my head tilted down and the cap keeping my identity safe, I arrived at the lower level of the hospital.
The kitchen was already closed for the night, but a small café stayed opened throughout the night.
Since it was late, I thought about what the hell I could grab my mama to snack on and head back up quickly.
I had no idea how I was going to get Sierra out of there. I was a wanted man, I could only hope they hadn’t identified me and issued a warrant yet.
I grabbed my mama a blueberry bagel with cream cheese and a small cup of coffee. I wasn’t hungry; my mind was focused on getting Sierra the care she needed. Food was the last thought on my mind.
I paid for the items and scooted down the hallway towards the elevator.
The air begun to feel ridiculously thick and my ribcage had prickliness to it. Something whooshed over me.
I knew why when up ahead a familiar person stood at the end of the hall eying me from a distance.
She flinched when she recognized me and turned on her heels stomping with a slight sprint back the opposite way.
“Damn it!”
I tried to haul ass towards the stairway without making a scene.
Dropping my mama’s bagels and coffee on the stairs, I skipped a step or two. I ran as if I was training for a marathon.
I hit gold once the fifth floor’s door was at my reach.
I opened the door slightly and poked my head out. The brim of my cap hid my eyes. With a tilt of my head, I saw the coast was clear to my left and right.
I breathed deeply with a heave of my chest and sprang to life stepping out and dashing towards Sierra’s room.
Sweating profusely, I wiped my face trying to walk with a slow and steady calm pace.
No one paid me any attention, but I had an eerie feeling that things were gonna get worse before they got better.
At Sierra’s room, I rushed in closing the door gently trying not to alarm my mama and Sierra.
My mama sat in the cushioned chair flicking through the TV channels and once she laid her eyes on another news broadcast, her mouth dropped.
“Yeah, that’s that dude Bryce, his mama stay over there,” some ghetto chick from my mama’s neighborhood that had a thang for me for years said into the mic and pointed at my mama’s red brick house.
“I’d know him from anywhere and that old man that died is his uncle Ray; he stays in trouble,” she smacked her lips and chewed her gum with attitude.
Just plain ghetto she was.
I stepped farther into the room and when my mama turned looking at me with disappointment in her eyes; it showed me just how hurt she was.
She knew what I did; she knew it was me on news when I talked to her earlier, but to have someone else recognize me sent her into a spiral of pain that she couldn’t return from.
